My tips on how to pass A&P
My first tip would be to actively recall and quiz yourself on the topic you are learning. So basically, there is alot of flashcards out there that give you a specific part of the body, and then you have to write down the answer and then reveal the flashcard to see if you got it right. Active recall also helps because you can just write down what you know (specifically what body part you know and where it is, also how to spell it) and what you need to go back on and revise.
My second tip would be to go on YouTube and watch videos of people explaining where the specific type of bone/muscle you are looking at, and explain to you where it is and what it does. I’ll link to the YouTube channel I personally watch. He gives alot of detail and is very patient with him, teaching https://www.youtube.com/@AnatomyHero
My Third tip would be to show up to all the lab classes that you have, its important that you show up and come prepared for class, be ready to have a learning mindset because in class you are gonna be learning the subject and after class what I like to do is stay for 2 hours and practice all the things weve learn so then It is more mentally engraved into my head. I will do active recall while my friends quiz me with the body parts, since in class we can see the models and use them.
My Fourth tip would be to socialize with people around you in class. It is a lot easier to learn when you have friends with whom you can organize study sessions! Classmates are a great tool to help you in class because it motivates you to show up to class and it makes learning fun! Having classmates that you enjoy spending time with also makes you remember stuff easier when you're having a good time.
My Fifth tip would be to use the class hours! In the A&P program at UWGB, they offer you to come whenever you want to the lab class and use the models. It is a lot easier knowing where the body parts are when you can see them in 3d instead of in a picture. It is wayyy harder to see it when it is in a screen. Also, to familiarize with different models in class since they don’t always look the same (especially the muscles), it’s important to know every single model to see what you are looking for in each one.
My Sixth tip would be to use your resources, if you know you are really struggling in A&P, then I would recommend using the UWGB resources to sign up for tutoring. Here is the link for the student resources website https://www.uwgb.edu/nursing-health-studies/contact/ (Specifically for nursing). I personally used the tutoring when I was struggling with Bio 201, and it helped tremendously. It is always ok to reach out for help when you need it, and it should be a resource that everyone, in my opinoin should use.
My 7th tip would be to look at the syllabus and organize. Its very important that the beginning class dates if your A&P class, you should look at your syllabus and see when things are gonna be due and when exams are gonna be scheduled. It gives you a time window of how many weeks you have to prepare, and overall, it makes you more organized and on top of your schedule. It’s never a good feeling when you have to skip a lab day, and it turns out that lab day was when you had your practical, so always always check the syllabus, and if you know you are gonna miss a day, make sure you talk to your professor first and send them an email about it. With A&P It is very strict about the attendance policy, so giving them a heads up is a must.
My 8th tip would be to record your lectures (if you can). For my A&P class, we are allowed to record lectures with permission of the professor. So whenever I am getting ready for an exam or if I wasn’t really paying attention that day, I would go back to see my lecture and see the important things that I missed and take notes through the recorded lecture. To not take up too much storage, I personally go back to the lecture the same day and then delete the videos (make sure I wrote really good notes too), so then my phone storage doesn’t get filled quickly.
My 9th Tip would be to draw the structures out to the best of your ability you can. You don’t have to be an artist to understand how a structure looks like, whenever you draw out a structure you notice key parts that disguinshes a different muscle from another. or a different bone from another and whenever you draw it out and look back at the model you can see what key parts of the structure you may have missed or what you needed to highlight instead, I find this to be really useful and it makes my brain have a clear image of the muscle/bone I need to find/name.
Now, my last tip, which in my opinion is the most important tip, is to take at least 20 minutes of your day to review what you saw in lab class every day. It can be when you're about to sleep or when you first start your day. But just look at the learning objective sheets that the professor gives out, and take 20 minutes of your day to go back to what you learned and really just process the information. It can be one topic about a certain topic for 20 minutes. It really is life-changing. Studying for hours is excruitating and it makes studying boring and students will procastinate because who wants to study for 6+ hours, but just 20 minutes a day you can take your time to learn about a specific topic and do that each day so then when exam day comes and you need to review at least instead of studying for 6 hours relearning each topic you learned, you can study for 2. It makes the workload feel lighter and that’s important in an information-dense class.
These tips made anatomy and psychology so much easier to understand and remember!
